About National Contractor Standards Institute
My name is Matthew Pennington. I am a licensed general contractor, ICC member, former inspector, and construction code instructor with more than two decades of hands-on experience in residential construction, design-build work, code application, project management, and contractor education.
Over the years I have owned and operated a design-build firm, built custom homes, managed complex projects, and worked directly in the realities of construction—not just the theory behind it. My background has taken me from Kansas to South Africa and through extensive international travel, all of which shaped the way I approach construction, problem solving, leadership, and education.
I have found that the combination of construction experience, systems thinking, and human behavior heavily influences the structure of the programs taught here.
Everything at National Contractor Standards Institute is centered around real-world application:
how to read plans without missing costly details,
how to move through the code efficiently,
how to run projects without constantly putting out fires,
and how to build a contracting business that can survive pressure, complexity, and growth.
No fluff.
No empty motivation.
No theory disconnected from reality.
Just practical systems, sound judgment, and operational construction knowledge that hold up when deadlines tighten, inspections fail, subcontractors disappear, and real money is on the line.
The goal is simple:
To help contractors become licensed, competent, and operationally confident—so they can build better projects, run stronger businesses, and move through this industry with a level of clarity most people never receive.
That’s what this institution was built for. For you to succeed in the industry. It’s my goal to help you, every step of the way!
